The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures is home to all humanities teaching and research focused on the cultures of China, Korea, and Japan. It houses all East Asian language centers and is the administrative center for the undergraduate major in East Asian Studies. Both the language programs and the major are designed to fulfill a range of student interests and career ambitions, extending beyond the humanities to the social sciences and the professional schools.

Weatherhead East Asian Institute Undergraduate Initiative
Since its establishment in 1949, Columbia University’s East Asian Institute has been a major center for research, teaching, and publishing on modern and contemporary Asia, covering China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Korean peninsula, and the countries of Southeast Asia; in recent years the scope has expanded to include Tibet and Inner Asia.
The Institute’s Undergraduate initiative aims to expand and broaden Weatherhead’s offerings to the undergraduate community.
